When a global turbine manufacturer needed a 3” gas line pressurized to 500 psi to close in less than 200 milliseconds, they asked Habonim for a solution to meet their special needs. A tight shut-off would ensure that in the case of ignition malfunction, the amount of unburned gas that flowed into the turbine would be small enough to avoid an internal explosion. It was essential that the fast closing time included all mechanical and electrical delays of the valve, actuator and solenoid, making the project demands even more extreme.
Given the flammable gas application, only a fire-safe valve certified to API 607 and ISO 10497 standards could be used. Both the three-piece F47W series and the one-piece flanged class 300, F32W series use the unique and durable HermetiX™ fire safe stem seal, certified to the ISO 15848-1 and API 641 standards for fugitive emission. The valves were automated with the COMPACT™ 4-piston spring return pneumatic actuator — the fastest, off-the-shelf, rack & pinion actuator on the market.
The F47/W three-piece valves feature a size range of 1/4”- 6” (DN8-DN150) and Class 900/400 pressure rating.
The CompAct actuator is a quarter-turn rack & pinion pneumatic actuator that doubles the torque of standard pneumatic actuators.
The unique capabilities of the CompAct actuators allowed Habonim to configure it to meet the customer’s requirements, with the Habonim valve integration ensuring a solution that would reliably perform in this demanding application with a high degree of repeatability, essential for the customer’s mission-critical application. The valves were cycled thousands of times at very short, rapid intervals at both Habonim’s facility and at the customer’s site, achieving a high degree of repeatability.
The key to this success is the CompAct actuator’s truly remarkable closing time of 120 milliseconds.
