World-first green hydrogen-to-homes heating network on the Fife H100 project

Posted by Eldad Ohayon | May 19, 2025 10:42:18 AM

Habonim is proud to be at the forefront of the emerging hydrogen market by taking part in the Fife 100 project by the Scottish Gas Network (SGN) project, which aims to create a unique green hydrogen heating network for homes.

The quest for sustainable energy solutions has led to groundbreaking projects worldwide, with –gas distribution company SGN's H100 Fife project standing out as a pioneering initiative. This world-first endeavor aims to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a zero-carbon alternative for domestic heating and cooking, positioning SGN at the forefront of the energy revolution.

Project Overview

H100 Fife is a landmark demonstration project that introduces 100% hydrogen into homes, providing critical evidence for future low-carbon policy decisions. The project is set to heat up to 300 local homes using renewable hydrogen produced by a dedicated electrolysis plant, powered by a nearby offshore wind turbine. This direct coupling of renewable power to hydrogen production for domestic heating is unprecedented, underscoring SGN's leadership in sustainable energy initiatives.

The Chosen Neighbourhood: Buckhaven and Denbeath

The coastal communities of Buckhaven and Denbeath in Fife were selected for this groundbreaking project. These areas are home to the world’s first green hydrogen gas network, offering residents the opportunity to participate in a zero-carbon heating solution. Participants receive free hydrogen connections, replacement hydrogen appliances, and maintenance throughout the project's duration, ensuring minimal disruption while contributing significantly to climate change mitigation efforts.

Safety and Community Engagement

Safety is paramount in the H100 Fife project. Natural gas networks are made safe by design 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The same safety principles and priorities will be applied to hydrogen gas, with all appropriate risk assessments and safety measures being implemented to ensure a safe network. An on-site storage unit ensures an uninterrupted hydrogen supply, even during the coldest weather conditions.

Community engagement has been a cornerstone of the project. Residents can now experience firsthand the potential of hydrogen for domestic heating and cooking. These homes feature familiar appliances like boilers and hobs, providing the same instant and responsive heat as natural gas but with zero carbon emissions.

Infrastructure: Piping, Valves, and Safety Measures

The project's infrastructure is meticulously designed to meet the highest safety and reliability standards. An 8.4 km hydrogen network has been constructed to distribute the green hydrogen produced. Once the project is operational, this network will ensure a consistent and safe supply of hydrogen, even during peak demand periods.

A critical component of this infrastructure is the integration of advanced valves and safety systems. ESI Technologies Group, in partnership with Habonim Industrial Valves & Actuators Ltd., has supplied manual trunnion pipeline ball valves, with actuated fast-closing and fast-opening emergency shutdown (ESD), as well as emergency depressurization (EDP) trunnion pipeline ball valves specifically designed for hydrogen applications.

These valves are integral to the hydrogen storage and pipeline network, ensuring safe and efficient operation.

Habonim's Hydrogen Trunnion Valves

Habonim's hydrogen trunnion valves are engineered to meet the stringent demands of hydrogen applications. They feature the patented HermetiXTM stem seal, designed to achieve zero leakage, emissions, and contamination. This design complies with fugitive emission requirements according to ISO 15848-1 and API 641 standards, ensuring environmental safety and operational efficiency.

Comprehensive Safety Certification Array

Habonim's commitment to safety and quality is further demonstrated by its comprehensive certification portfolio. The company's valves and actuators hold certifications including ATEX IIC,; fire-safe certifications per API 607, API 6FA, and ISO 10497 standards, ensuring functionality during and after fire exposure; and fugitive emissions certifications, confirming compliance with stringent emission standards.

Conclusion

SGN's H100 Fife project exemplifies innovation in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. By integrating advanced technologies and prioritizing safety, the project seeks to demonstrate hydrogen as a domestic energy source and also set a precedent for future initiatives worldwide. The collaboration with industry leaders like ESI Technologies Group and Habonim Industrial Valves & Actuators, ensures that the infrastructure meets the highest standards, paving the way for a zero-carbon future.

Habonim solutions are designed to meet the requirements of each hydrogen process stage, supporting the move towards an emissions-reduced world.
